Steam blowing is a cleaning technique used when commissioning new steam pipe lines.

As with all cleaning methods, a steam blow is performed to remove unwanted materials – generically called debris - from a steam system. However, unlike say, chemical cleaning, which is used in a wide variety of applications, steam blowing is almost always used for one particular application. This is to clean up the components and pipes that supply steam to a steam turbine. Target plate steam blows are used to confirm the cleanliness of the lines being cleaned prior to steam being introduced to a steam turbine.

Although in theory steam could be used to clean many different types of industrial plant, the practical considerations mean that it is very rarely considered for any application other than cleaning of steam systems where the steam is used to drive a turbine.
